The Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art is proud to introduce you to Egyptian royalty with its latest exhibit, Queen Nefertari: Eternal Egypt! Discover the celebrated Queen Nefertari, the Great Royal Wife of Pharaoh Ramses II, at this exhibit on Saturday, December 21st.
Queen Nefertari was known as The One for Whom the Sun Shines. Experience the magnificence of royal palaces and tombs, including Nefertari’s burial chamber, which is considered one of the greatest artistic achievements in the Valley of the Queens. Explore the daily life of the village where tomb builders and artisans lived, worked and worshipped more than 3,000 years ago.
Nefertari was Ramses II’s wife for over 24 years. What was probably a politically inspired union would, over time, blossom into an amorous relationship wherein Ramses II celebrated his love for her with monuments and poetry dedicated to her honor. The many titles ascribed to her attest to the esteem Ramses held for her and the various roles she undertook in her function as queen. She is known to have even accompanied Ramses, in some cases, on military campaigns.
Carrying highly honorable titles such as Lady of the Two Lands, Great Royal Wife, and Mistress of Upper and Lower Egypt, Nefertari's tomb is considered one of the largest tombs found in the Valley of Queens.
Drawn from the world-renowned Museo Egizio in Turin, Italy, the exhibition will bring together works that present the richness of life in ancient Egypt, focusing on the role of women—goddesses, queens, and commoners. Queen Nefertari: Eternal Egypt will provide a unique opportunity for visitors to experience the discovery of the tomb of one of the most famous figures of the time. Works of art from the excavations will bring ancient Egypt to life for 21st-century audiences.
Queen Nefertari: Eternal Egypt will be on view until March 29, 2020. Admission is $18, which can be purchased at www.nelson-atkins.org or in-person at The Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art. All visitors must have a ticket.
