An Easy Way to Clean Your Showerhead with Baking Soda

You cook with it, you freshen up your home with it, and now, you can use it to remove your showerhead of calcium deposits, hard water stains, and overall grime. What is it? It’s baking soda, of course! Baking soda is a natural fit for shower-related cleaning jobs. That’s because, when mixed with an acid like white vinegar, the household staple can help descale your shower’s fixtures of water buildup, leaving you with a fresh, totally clean showerhead.

If you’re interested in removing old grime and buildup from your showerhead, check out this simple, three-step method, which requires only baking soda, vinegar, a plastic bag, and a rubber band.

Step 1: Create a reactive cleaning agent.

Use baking soda and vinegar to create a fizzy cleaning agent, which will help remove old scum and grime from your showerhead. Simply combine 1 cup baking soda with 1 cup white vinegar and add to a large (preferably gallon-sized) plastic bag. If the mixture starts to bubble, you’re on the right track.

Step 2: Cover the showerhead with the mixture.

If you aren’t already there, head to your bathroom and fully immerse your showerhead in the bag of cleaning solution. You’ll want to attach the bag so that it can continue to immerse the showerhead for hours, so use a rubber band to tie the bag to the base of the showerhead until it feels secure.

Step 3: Watch as your showerhead cleans itself.

Once your showerhead is immersed in the solution, leave it be. Our best advice is to leave the bag attached to the showerhead overnight so that when you wake up ready to shower, you can simply remove the bag, rinse the remaining residue with hot water, and enjoy a freshly washed showerhead.
