What to Wear Besides Sunscreen to Avoid Sunburn

Sunscreen is a must-have for those late summer beach days or weekends spent outdoors. However, even the highest SPFs allow a small percentage of UV rays through to your skin – and this is even more likely if you are one of the many sunscreen users who don’t apply a thick enough layer to adequately protect your skin. This makes it even more important that you look to supplemental measures when it comes to preventing sunburn and potentially deadly sun damage. Here are 3 things to wear to best prevent yourself from harsh UV rays.

UV Protective Eyewear

Sunglasses aren’t only good for making it easier to see in the sun. Sunglasses with UV protective lenses can also help prevent skin cancers on and around the eye area, as well as damage to your eye itself. In fact, research suggests that chronic, unprotected sunlight exposure may lead to changes in the eye that increase your risk of cataracts. Fortunately, the fix is simple enough: purchase and wear UV protective lenses every time you’re outdoors.

Wide Brimmed Hat

Keep cool and protected with a wide-brim sun hat! A hat protects often-missed spots like your scalp, the tops of your ears, and your hairline while allowing extra protection for your face and neck. Ideally, you should choose a hat with a brim of at least three inches and a high Ultraviolet Protection Factor. Not sure if your hat is UPF rated? If the hat has a wide brim and tightly woven fabric that you can’t see through, that’s the next best thing.

Long-Sleeve Rash Guard

A long-sleeve rash guard might not be the first thing you think of when it comes to protecting your skin from the sun, but it offers excellent protection and ease of wear. According to the journal Cancer Causes & Control, wearing long-sleeve protective clothing is better at preventing sunburns than sunscreen, considering how ineffectively most people apply sunscreen. Unlike sunscreen, which must be reapplied frequently and in dense amounts, long-sleeve shirts or other tightly woven clothing – like swim cover-ups – can simply be worn for ultimate protection.
