Discover the stories of talented local artists Kathy Liao, Yoonmi Nam, and F. Maria Velasco as they talk about culture shock, loss of memories, identities, and the re-inventing of self in pursuit of the American Dream.

Kathy Liao moved to the United States as a child from Taiwan. She currently resides in Kansas City, MO, and teaches painting and printmaking as an Assistant Professor of Art at Missouri Western State University. Drawing inspirations from her diverse cultural background and personal history, Kathy Liao mixed media work is about the intimate yet universal concept of relationships.

Yoonmi Nam was born and raised in Seoul, South Korea. She moved to America to study at the Rhode Island School of Design, where she received a MFA degree in Painting/Printmaking in 2000. Her work has been shown both nationally and internationally. Yoonmi Nam teaches printmaking and drawing at the University of Kansas, where she has been a faculty member since 2001.

Maria Velasco is a Spanish-born artist who has been living and working in the US since the 1990s. Her interdisciplinary work consists of site-specific environments, urban interventions, sculptural objects, and temporary public art commission. She has shown her work nationally and internationally. She is an Associate Professor of Visual Art at the University of Kansas, and teaches courses in Installation Art, Drawing, and Professional Practices for artists. She currently lives in Lawrence, KS.
